Reminiscence technique for dementia sufferers in Rugby
13 May 2008
A new technique is being used to improve the short-tern memories of people with Alzheimer's and dementia in Rugby. Jennie Russ, a carer at the Blaxham Day Centre, has been trained to improve the mental welfare of sufferers by stimulating their five senses. The Coventry Telegraph has reported how Ms Russ was shown the techniques to improve the mental welfare of people with sensory and communication difficulties by working with the Warwickshire Reminiscence Action Project (Wrap) over the course of eight weeks.Mike Strophair, company secretary for Wrap, told the newspaper that it had been a "great success" for Ms Russ and the other six people who underwent the training."It has been an exciting opportunity to move into a new field as it is the first time we have trained someone to deliver Reminiscence to people with learning disabilities," he added.According to the NHS, reminiscence therapy involves the discussion of past activities, events and experiences using familiar prompts from the person's history and is one of the most popular psychosocial interventions in dementia care. © Adfero Ltd
