Soccability team awarded community grant

14 May 2008

Young footballers with special needs in Essex are celebrating after their team was awarded a £1,000 community grant.

The Beech United Soccability team received an O2 It's Your Community Award to buy new footballs, bibs, cones and nets, reports the South Essex News.

Up to 30 children, each with different special needs that make them unable to play in regular clubs, turn up for regular training sessions at the club, originally formed by John Smith.

Mr Smith said that the club was thrilled to receive the award and it will make a massive difference to both the club and the young people involved.

"Playing football is something most kids take for granted, but for kids with Aspergers, Downs syndrome or autism it isn't always possible to be part of regular clubs," he added.

The O2 It's Your Community Awards hands out funding to up to 60 projects in the UK each month, which aim to engage young people in new recreational activities. The company says it wants to contribute to the development and sustainability of society though the awards.
