Learning disabilities programme wins regional award

 A work experience programme for people with learning disabilities has received a prestigious regional award. The scheme, devised by employees at Sunderland Royal Hospital, received £2,500 of funding in the Bright Ideas in Health Awards, reports the Sunderland Echo.Equality and diversity co-ordinator Stephanie Smith and biomedical scientist Linda Selby devised the programme, which gives work experience to school leaving students who suffer with learning disabilities.Students are offered placements in the hospital post room, offices and laboratories with the aim of giving participants a sense of achievement, together with breaking down the barriers of learning disabilities.A spokeswoman for City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, told the publication that the trust was delighted that its staff's work was recognised."Our work experience scheme for young people with learning disabilities has brought huge benefits to the young people involved, increasing their self-esteem and confidence," she said.The Bright Ideas in Health Awards celebrate high levels of innovation and creativity among regional NHS staff. © Adfero Ltd
