OLDER PEOPLE LEARNING DISABILITIES MENTAL HEALTH

Mencap volunteer given two special awards

18 November 2008

A volunteer working for Mencap has been given two major awards for her performance.

Bernadette Spellman, 26, who herself suffers from a learning disability, has spent ten years volunteering at her local Riding for the Disabled Association and has spent many years using her own experiences to attract more people to help out the charity.

In recognition for her dedication she has been awarded the National Trophy of Voluntary Work and the European Active Citizen of the Year 2008.

Amy Rylance, volunteering manager at Mencap, said Ms Spellman's hard work has helped to change the way people view learning disabilities "more than anyone".

She added: "She has walked into organisations that are very hostile to involving volunteers with a learning disability and her training has completely changed their view of what someone with a learning disability can achieve."

Maureen Piggot, Mencap's Northern Ireland director was awarded an OBE earlier this month at Buckingham Palace in recognition of her services to people with a learning disability.
