"Unfit" mental health ward closed
26 November 2008
An essential hospital ward that supports hundreds of elderly patients with mental health problems is set to close, it has been reported. The Bodnant EMI unit is part of Llandudno Hospital and staff were informed on Tuesday that in-patient respite care was being axed because it was unfit for use, according to the Daily Post. With 16 beds, the ward offers patients one or two weeks of respite care, but it is believed the unit will be shut by Christmas or early in the new year, the paper states.Former Bodnant employee Carol Marubbi, from the Llandudno Hospital Action Group, told the news provider: "This is disgraceful. These are the most vulnerable people in society."She added: "The health trust has let the building fall into an appalling state which is why it now not fit for use."A spokesperson for the North Wales NHS Trust said that the closure was to improve services and not reduce them.Meanwhile the trust has recently won the NHS Environmental Team Award at the 2008 Wales Business & Sustainability Awards.
