Halton 'has high rate of mental health problems'

Halton has the highest rate of hospital admissions for people suffering from mental health problems in Cheshire, according to new research.

Between April and October of this year 214 Halton residents were admitted to hospital with a mental health conditions and of those 42 were diagnosed with depression for the first time, according to the news provider.

Statistics released by the North West Mental Health Commission also show that NHS Halton and St Helens PCT spends less than the national average on patients with mental health issues, reports the Cheshire Chronicle.

The paper states that £127 per person is spent in Halton, compared with the nationwide average of £153.

Some 46 were diagnosed with Schizophrenia and 32 had attempted to self-harm.

Meanwhile, research from the University of Bristol shows that more than ten per cent of adults discharged from psychiatric inpatient care in England and Wales may attempt to self-harm.
