Britain spends 14p on Alzheimer's research
03 December 2008
Funding for Alzheimer's research in the UK is among the lowest in Europe, with just 14p per person spent on investigating the disease last year, it has been reported. In contrast, the US government spends more than seven times that amount, ploughing the equivalent of £1.03 per person into research surrounding the degenerative condition, according to the Daily Mail. The paper states that just three per cent of the government's medical research budget is spent on researching Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia which affects 700,000 people in the UK.Rebecca Wood, chief executive of the Alzheimer's Research Trust, told the news provider: "If scientists could work out how to delay the condition by five years, we could halve the number of people who die with dementia."Meanwhile, Susanne Akterin, a researcher at the Karolinska Institute's Alzheimer's Disease Research Centre, claims there is a link between fatty foods and the risk of developing Alzheimer's.
