Prison 'not suitable people with severe mental health issues'

04 December 2008

Prison is inappropriate for people suffering from severe mental health problems, it has been claimed.

According to a new report from Scotland's chief inspector of prisons Dr Andrew McLellan, there are at least 315 prisoners with serious mental health issues in Scotland's jails.

Dr McLellan said there were a number of concerns uncovered by the report, including the fact that the number of people with such problems entering the prison system in the country was on the increase.

He added: "Prisoners with severe and enduring mental health problems can cause problems for staff and for other prisoners."

Dr McLellan concluded that the primary concern for people suffering from mental health problems is treatment and hospital is the place for this.

Meanwhile, according to research by Liverpool John Moores University and the Co-operative bank, reoffending rates are reduced in prisoners who open a current or savings account while in prison.
