What it's like to live here
Each person has an individualised monthly planner, which maps their appointments and schedule for the upcoming weeks. This includes cooking, cleaning and laundry days, planned events and outings as well as in house games and activities. We help facilitate paid and voluntary work as well as educational courses and many individuals attend these during the week, with support as needed. Those who use our service are encouraged to maintain social contacts within the community and opportunities to further their social network are actively sought.
Surroundings
Brooke House is within walking distance of Southampton city centre, with Southampton Central train station being just at the end of the road. There are also a wide variety of shops in nearby Shirley, which is again a short walk away. There are many facilities and attractions nearby, including pubs, clubs, a bowling alley, cinemas, theatres, leisure centres, parks, the coast line and the New Forest is only a bus ride away. There are several colleges in close proximity, which offer full and part time courses, as well as holiday programmes. There are numerous bus routes near the house, including a free service which goes around the city centre and to the ferry terminal, and the house has good links to the M27 and M3 motorways.
Service facilities
Brooke House is a converted Edwardian family house with a bright and lively atmosphere. Those who use our service are encouraged to individualise their rooms and are involved in the decoration and furnishing of the home. There is an additional upstairs lounge, which service users have recently completely redecorated. Those who use our service are supported to take part in menu planning, shopping and cooking their meals, either as a group or individuals, depending on their progress with independent living skills. There is an ample sized garden, which individuals are supported to maintain, with seating areas and barbecues in the summer. Brooke House has its own transport, which is used mainly for group activities, as independent travel on public transport is promoted.
